From a messy idea to a plan your AI coding tool can actually use
AI coding tools have gotten very good at writing code. What they still can't do is guess what you want. Most of the time an agent goes off the rails, the code isn't the problem. The plan was a two-line prompt, and the agent filled the gaps with its own assumptions.
The fix is a better plan, and the fastest way to get one is to talk it through.
Why the plan is the bottleneck
When you type a prompt, you write the parts you've already figured out. The parts you haven't figured out โ edge cases, what "done" means, which tradeoff you'd pick โ quietly go missing. A coding agent then makes those decisions for you, and you find out three files later.
Talking works differently. When someone asks "what happens if the user isn't logged in?" you have to answer, and the answer becomes part of the plan. Planning out loud surfaces the decisions that typing lets you skip.
A 15-minute voice planning session
Here's a structure that works for most features or small projects:
- The goal, in one breath (1 min). What are you building and who is it for? If you can't say it in a breath, that's your first finding.
- What done looks like (3 min). Describe the finished thing from the user's point of view. What do they click, see, and get?
- The hard parts (5 min). Data, auth, edge cases, anything you're unsure of. This is where a good partner pushes back.
- Out of scope (2 min). Say what you're not doing. Agents love to over-build; a clear "not this" saves you review time.
- First three steps (4 min). Turn it into concrete action items an agent can start on.
Doing it in VoicePlan.it
VoicePlan.it is built for exactly this kind of session. You speak naturally, and the AI asks the hard questions and challenges vague assumptions while it writes the plan in real time โ documents, diagrams and action items. It can search the web mid-session to ground the plan in real data, and you can upload reference documents for it to work from. When the plan needs to change, you come back and talk through the update.
The handoff is the part that saves the most time. VoicePlan.it includes a cloud-hosted MCP server, so instead of copying the plan into a chat window, you connect your coding tool once and it reads the whole plan โ goals, requirements, decisions and action items โ directly. Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf and Codex all support it. The server URL and token are on your plan page under "Connect via MCP".
If you want to try it, the Starter pack is a one-time $5 for 15 voice minutes that never expire โ about one session like the one above.
Tips for better sessions
- Don't prepare a script. The point is to discover what you haven't decided yet.
- Let the pushback land. If you can't answer a question, that's a task for the plan, not a problem with the session.
- End with action items. A plan without first steps is just notes.
Voice-first is spreading
Planning isn't the only place where talking or listening beats staring at a screen. If your commute is for catching up rather than planning, MiniNews does the same for the news: an AI-generated morning audio digest of the top stories, built for Wear OS watches, so you can listen hands-free instead of scrolling.
